This is intended to be a homage to very many musicians I've loved since I started listening to music. My intention is to tell what I know about them, hoping that those people who like them too, will help me fill numerous gaps, which I may have in their careers and discographies. Sorry, but there are no MP3 audio files here at all, just info (and love for the musicians).

Tom Dowd (producer / engineer)

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY:

Great producer, Tom Dowd´s name appear in hundreds of albums. I just include here some of the ones I know, trying to complete the page along the weeks...

Tom Dowd was born on October 20th, 1925 in Manhattan, New York. After working in the physics discipline, he started a new job in a recording studio in the 40s, especially for Atlantic label, later working as producer for many of the artists.

To me, the best album featuring Tom Dowd is Derek & The Dominos´ Layla and other assorted love songs, but we can find him producing great albums by Cream Rod Stewart, Allman Brothers Band, Freddie King, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eagles, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Dusty Springfield, also jazz artists (usually for producer Nesuhi Ertegun) such as Charlie Mingus, John Coltrane, Herbie Mann, David ´Fathead´ Newman. Even Spanish singer Miguel Rios used Tom Dowd as his producer for one of his albums, El año del cometa.

Tom Dowd passed away on October 27th, 2002 in Aventura, Florida, due to emphysema. He was 77. Thanks for all your great work in those mythical albums...

    • My opinion: An album for cheering yourself up.Aretha Franklin is one of the best soul singers. This album, released in 1968, was made when she was through her best period, containing classics such as 'Chain of fools' (a Don Covay tune), '(You make me feel like) a natural woman' (superb song penned by the team Goffin-King and album producer Jerry Wexler). The album also contains renditions of The Rascals tune ´Groovin´', or Curtis Mayfield´s ´People get ready´.The list of musicians include people from Muscle Shoals Studios (guitarist Jimmy Johnson or drummer Roger Hawkins), plus other label-mates, such as sax player King Curtis. Eric Clapton (at that time, still a member of Cream) makes a guest apperance playing the guitar solo in the track 'Good to me as I am to you'. Other guitarists in the album are Bobby Womack and Joe South, solo artists in their own.Spooner Oldham (keyboards) and Tommy Cogbill (bass) were sessionmen appearing in countless country albums. Some trivia (I enjoy writing that!):Rod Stewart also covered both '(You make me feel like) a natural woman' and ´People get ready'. He also used some of these musicians: drummer Roger Hawkins, guitarist Jimmy Johnson and arranger Arif Mardin in his beautiful albums Atlantic crossing and A night in the town.Jimmy Johnson and Roger Hawkins also appear in 4 Bobby Womack albums: Understanding (1972), Facts of life (1973), Looking for love again (1974) and Home is where the heart is (1976).Eric Clapton hired Roger Hawkins for his album Money and cigarettes (1933), and also enlisted him for his live band in February 1983 (although briefly; he was replaced that same month), 15 years after they met here.
