This is intended to be a homage to very many musicians I've loved since I started listening to music. My intention is to tell what I know about them, hoping that those people who like them too, will help me fill numerous gaps, which I may have in their careers and discographies. Sorry, but there are no MP3 audio files here at all, just info (and love for the musicians).

JOHNNY MAKINS SKIFFLE GROUP

The first band Tex played in was the Johnny Makins Skiffle Group, the lineup being:

Tony Meehan left them to join The Vipers, and was replaced by Brian Bennett. It's interesting that both Meehan and Bennett were later in The Shadows.

Next band I know with Tex is Vince Eager backing band:

They only did a pantomime season in Southport and used a local drummer, whose name isn't remembered.

Then, Bobby Woodman joined Vince Eager´s Beat Boys (their new name):

Soon after, the band is joined by the great Big Jim Sullivan:

This should be around 1958 or so. Soon, they were approached by great rocker Vince Taylor to be their live band.

VINCE TAYLOR BAND

Great rocker Vince Taylor approached the members of Tex Maxins Band to to be their own backing live band, Vince Taylor & The Playboys in August 1958:

Another lineup for The Beat Boys was this one:

With them, Tex played for many of the singers under management of Larry Parnes: Dickie Pride, Billy Fury, Duffy Power, Eden Kane, The Viscounts, Julian X, Johnny Gentle, Sally Kelly, John Leyton, Jerry Dorsey (more known later as Engelbert Humperdinck), Tommy Bruce, Davy Jones (not he of the Monkees) and Eddie Cochran.

Other info on members of The Beat Boys (I know up to 8 members)
To be covered (5): Georgie Fame, Colin Green, Brian Gregg, Alan Le Claire, Bobby Woodman

VINCE EAGER BAND (again)

Kenny Packwood replaced Colin Green in Vince Eager´s Quiet Three (still in 1960, just my guess):

VINCE TAYLOR BAND (again)

And then, in September 1959, Tex Makins came back to play briefly again with Vince Taylor:

BILLY FURY AND THE BLUE FLAMES

One of the most successful singers managed by Larry Parnes was Billy Fury, so a band was assembled in June 1961 to back him in a stable basis, The Blue Flames (they were backing Clay Nichols under the slightly different name The Blueflames):

GEORGIE FAME & THE BLUE FLAMES

They were also joined sometimes by sax player Earl Watson (they were friends and Earl´s band usually shared stage with them in the same clubs).

In May 1962, Colin Green left them.

In May 1962, great guitarist Joe Moretti joined Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames. The lineup was also augmented with great ones Mick Eve and Speedy Acquaye:

But soon after, Moretti left them.

John McLaughlin is the new guitarist for Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames, replacing the departing Joe Moretti:

In July 1962, they expand their lineup with a second sax player:

This band appeared in half of the album Rhythm and blues at The Ricky Tick, released in 2014.

In October 1962, Tex leaves the band (being replaced by Boots Slade).

JOHNNY HALLYDAY BAND

In October 1962, Tex Makins travels to France, and joins local star Johnny Hallyday, under the name Johnny Hallyday's Golden Stars:

êGeorgie Fame Band

But Tex Makins returns to The Blue Flames in October 1963.

Other info on members of Johnny Hallyday Band (I know up to 205 members)

GEORGIE FAME & THE BLUE FLAMES (again)

Tex Makins returns to The Blue Flames in October 1963, asked by Georgie:

GEORGIE FAME BAND #?
Oct 63-Apr 64
êJohnny Halliday Band
Georgie Fame
vocals, keyboards
Tex Makins
bass
Mick Eve
sax
John Marshall
sax, as Johnny Marshall
Speedy Acquaye

Red Reece
drums
+
Eddie Thornton
trumpet, sometimes
Tommy Frost
drums, sometimes
OR
Roy Mills
drums, sometimes

For a while, Red Reece became ill, and he was replaced by Tommy Frost and Roy Mills. Another occasional band member was trumpet player Eddie Thornton.

This lineup released their 2nd album, Fame at last, in 1964.

But more changes happened in Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames in April 1964:

GEORGIE FAME BAND #?
Apr 64-May 64
Georgie Fame
vocals, keyboards
Tex Makins
bass
Mick Eve
sax
Peter Coe
sax
Speedy Acquaye
percussion
Jimmie Nicol
drums

On a side note, Jimmie Nicol was later famous for being the drummer who played with The Beatles in an Australian tour when Ringo couldn't make it (although he had a long career before and after that).

When Jimmy Nicol left Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames, a great musician arrives, Phil Seamen:

GEORGIE FAME BAND #?
May 64-Jul 64
Georgie Fame
vocals, keyboards
Tex Makins
bass
Mick Eve
sax
Peter Coe
sax
Speedy Acquaye
percussion
Phil Seamen
drums

A great loss for the band was Mick Eve who left them in July 1964. During the period he was in the band, some singers had made the odd gig with the band, although they weren't official members: John Hodgkinson (later to reappear as J.W. Hodgkinson in the superb band If), Ronnie Jones, Paul Williams or Geno Washington were some that would come down and do a number or two with the band.

This was the first lineup of Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames without Mick Eve:

GEORGIE FAME BAND #?
Jul 64-Sep 64
Georgie Fame
vocals, keyboards
Tex Makins
bass
Peter Coe
sax
Speedy Acquaye
percussion
Phil Seamen
drums
OR
Micky Waller
drums

But Seamen wasn't able to play all of the time, so Micky Waller was brought to play when Seaman wasn't available.

Waller (and Seamen) left in September 1964.

Another different lineup for George Fame & The Blue Flames in October 1964, marking the reunion with an old friend, Colin Green, who was the original guitarist in the band. Bill Eyden is the new drummer, replacing mythical Phil Seamen:

GEORGIE FAME BAND #?
Oct 64-Nov 64
Georgie Fame
vocals, keyboards
Colin Green
guitar
Tex Makins
bass
Peter Coe
sax
Speedy Acquaye
percussion
Bill Eyden
drums

A new musician is added in November 1964, great sax player Glenn Hughes:

GEORGIE FAME BAND #?
Nov 64-Mar 65
Georgie Fame
vocals, keyboards
Colin Green
guitar
Tex Makins
bass
Peter Coe
sax
Glenn Hughes
sax
Speedy Acquaye
percussion
Bill Eyden
drums

This band appeared in half of the album Rhythm and blues at The Ricky Tick, released in 2014.

And another musician adds as a permanent member of Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames in March 1965, old mate Eddie Thornton:

GEORGIE FAME BAND #?
Mar 65-Dec 65
Georgie Fame
vocals, keyboards
Colin Green
guitar
Tex Makins
bass
Eddie Thornton
trumpet
Peter Coe
sax
Glenn Hughes

The Sidewindersê
Speedy Acquaye
percussion
Bill Eyden
drums
Stan Tracey Groupê

But in December 1965 (or maybe in October 1965?), Bill Eyden leaves (to be replaced by a young Mitch Mitchell).

In December 1965, Mitch Mitchell joins Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames:

GEORGIE FAME BAND #?

Georgie Fame
vocals, keyboards
Colin Green
guitar
Tex Makins
bass
Eddie Thornton
trumpet
Peter Coe
sax

But Tex Makins leaves almost immediately.

THE FLOWERPOT MEN

In February 1968, Lord was replaced for a short time by Johnny Carroll. I don't know if there were more lineups in the meantime, but this was another great one, with the fantastic Tex Makins:

They recorded lots of live tracks for the BBC and other places, so maybe some of them have surfaced in compilations or reissues. Can someone tell me, please?
When Carroll leaves, the band didn't recruit a new keyboardist:

AND THEN...

And then, I haven't known more things about his musical career during many years, sadly. Can someone provide some info, please?

THUNDERCLAP

In 2005, Pete Goodall resurrects the band, initially appearing just as Thunderclap or as GoodMoney. This was one of the lineups:

AND THEN...

QUESTIONS:

01. Does Tex play in Johnny Kidd & The Pirates classic ´Shaking all over´?

02. Does anybody know about sessions made by Tex? Being such great player, it's impossible he wasn't hired for albums!! He probably played in albums with Pete Goodall in the sixties.

03. Does Tex play any recordings by Donovan?

04. Does Tex play in these songs by Paul Simon, ´Homeward bound´ and ´Richard Cory´? Also Colin Green and Red Reece?

05. Did Jungle Soup ever recorded any material?

06. Were Tex, Carlo Little and Ged Peck a band of their own, or they only backed the Flower Pot Men and David Garrick?

07. Was Tex a member of Freddie Mack Band ever?

    1. Hello .-I played keyboards in a band in 1968 with Boz Burrell,Tex Maykins, Colin Pincott, and Roy ? on drums. My name then was Peter Beagley, but after that I returned to Australia ,and changed my name to Peter Head. I'm still playing around Sydney now.
The band then was just called "Boz"

      1. Hi, Peter - Thanks for writing here! I know who you are: Headband, playing with the late Wendy Saddington around 1985, etc. But I didn't know about your time in England. The drummer you mention must be Roy Mills (played with Georgie Fame, Alan Price, Paul Williams and Jackie Lynton, among others - also with Boz in a later band called Mirrors). If you don't mind writing me at my mail at molympus1@gmail.com, I'd like to ask you some questions. I guess the band timeline should be very early 1968, maybe playing gigs in Germany? Boz, Pincott and Makins also formed a new band called Panorama, probably after you left. Thanks again for your message.
